A Country Getaway to Norfolk County

If you’re like us, living in a city for too long can feel a bit strange – it gives us a case of itchy feet! The great thing about being based in Toronto is that there are so many places to explore nearby. Even just driving for a couple of hours, you can find yourself in some beautiful spots. One of our favourite spots near Toronto is Norfolk County – here’s what you need to know when you visit!

Where to stay – Long Point Eco Adventures
Norfolk County

It’s a great place to go star gazing!

For those of you who love being surrounded by nature but need to stay in something a little fancier than your standard tents, glamping is the answer! At Long Point Eco-Adventures they have a couple of really awesome accommodation options. We stayed in both a Wilderness Pod and a Wilderness Suite. The pods are the cutest, they have a bed, couch, fridge and some of them have their own toilet – showers are communal not too far away.

So cozy, your home away from home.

Norfolk County

How many times can we say… these pods are SO CUTE!

For a slightly more luxurious option, you can stay in a Wilderness Suite – with a full bathroom and outdoor shower underneath the stars. They’re giant tents with their own outdoor area and super comfortable bed. And when you get up in the morning there’s a delicious breakfast waiting for you!

Hello, luxury!

Norfolk County

Glamping at its finest!

There’s something for everyone, even vegetarians like us!

Where to eat & drink – Burning Kiln Winery
Norfolk County

Conveniently located 5 minutes away from Long Point Eco-Adventures…

Norfolk County is known for its wineries that keep popping up! Lucky for us, Burning Kiln Winery was right across the road from where we were staying. They have delicious food served there from a David’s food truck, and an insane selection of wines! It’s definitely worth stopping in to check it out.

WIne

Perfect way to un-wine…

Lots of snacks and substantial deliciousness to munch on.

Experience nature in Norfolk County – Big Creek Paddle Adventure
Southern Ontario

Having a wee paddle down the ‘Canadian Amazon’

Long Point Eco-Adventures offer lots of activities, and their Big Creek Paddle Adventure sounded right up our alley. Not only do you get to float down a creek through beautiful scenery – it’s an amazing place to spot birds and wildlife. We were lucky enough to spot a raccoon, hooded merganser ducklings and a bald eagle!

This little guy just chilling out by the water!

A juvenile bald eagle – it was massive.

Hooded merganser ducklings! This was the first time they’ve been spotted in 8 years.

Have an adrenaline rush – Zip Lining at Long Point Eco-Adventures

Living on the edge…

You can’t go wrong with a little bit of a zip line and tree canopy adventure! You can rock up to the main office at Long Point Eco-Adventures and take off on a zip line from there. The guides are friendly, helpful and it’s such a rush.

Meandering along the treetops!

Just hanging out…

Take a breather at the beach – Port Dover

Hello, summer! We missed you!

A beach day is the best day! Port Dover is one of those classic beach towns where everyone’s in togs (Kiwi for ‘swimsuits’) and all the shops are selling ice-creams and hot dogs. You can go for a little dip, or lay on the sand in the sun.

Relax away.

Get your bicycle on with Red Apple Rides

Beautiful day for a bit of a cycle!

What’s better than bike riding? Try bike riding and eating! Not at the same time… but Red Apple Rides offer really cool foodie and lunch tours. So not only do you get to ride around and see the area, but you get to stop at neat places to eat along the way. Honestly, does anything sound better than that?

One of the coolest stops – had some nibbles and wine with this view all to ourselves.

Such an awesome way to see the area.

Head to Long Point Provincial Park

The Long Point Wetland Complex conservation area!

Long Point is the longest fresh water sand spit in the world! It’s also an incredible place to see birds and wildlife. We didn’t have enough time to take a boat ride to the tip, but would love to do that one day.

Norfolk County – we love you!

There’s so much to do in Norfolk County and we only scratched the surface. A huge thanks to Norfolk County Tourism for hosting us in this wonderful place. Our time was too short and we hope to be back sooner rather than later!
